Generally speaking, the ladies at the AT in Lakeside Mall are kind and helpful. But tonight I happened to be shopping late - something a Ms. Tanda (sp?) did not seem to appreciate. She rolled her eyes at me when I asked for a fitting room. In an effort to smoothe things over, I tried to make small talk. I asked her how her night was going but she ignored me. She glared at me while she counted the items in my hand - which was really strange: she was obviously NOT looking at the merchandise that I was taking into the fitting room - because she was glaring at me! I had 10 items in my hand. When she'd finished counting, she spat the word "9" and harrumphed loudly. I considered correcting her, but decided against it. When I brought my things to the checkout counter she made a point to be syrupy sweet to the woman standing next to her behind the cash wrap (a woman she would later identify as her sorority sister) while continuing to be overtly rude to me. I think she took 12 minutes to ring up a necklace and three blouses. She stopped what she was doing a couple of times to engage in conversation with her sorority sister who was still behind the cash wrap and another woman milling about the store. She folded and unfolded my things repeatedly. She kept "losing track" of my the number of pieces that I was purchasing - at the checkout counter where there was exactly ONE other item. She finally finished processing my purchase, she held out the receipt and glared at me when I took it. As I turned to go, I asked for her name (for the purpose of writing this review). She said, "Tanda". I smiled and said, "Great." I turned and walked toward the door. Though I had not told her what my name was, she shouted my first name through the store: "Taylor!" I assume she got my name from my transaction information? From whatever credit card information was still showing on her computer? I turned, "Yes?" She glared, "Just checking. Tanda. And Taylor. Hmm." And then, for the first time all night, she grinned at me. But it was far from a friendly grin. Oddly, I think she was trying to be threatening.
I didn't roll my eyes. I didn't harumph. I wasn't small or petty. I didn't make my annoyance known. Because at the end of the day... what would that Have accomplished? Would the customer suddenly become more intelligent. No. Would he/she have suddenly been more considerate? Maybe. But I doubt it. Would it have made me feel any better? Any more important? Nah. What it would have gotten me though is a negative review. What else? Maybe... A reprimand? A write up? Terminated?
I've worked retail before. I've worked late and I've had bad days. Sometimes I loved the customers. Sometimes I hated them. I have thought them utterly stupid and inconsiderate. I can remember actually wanting to shake a woman once. I've secretly wished customers splinters and flat tires. I'd go so far as to say that I actually despised some of them. Seriously! And that's ok. Really. You don't have to like everyone. Or, anyone, for that matter.
But you know what...
It was a hilariously obvious attempt for a small, disgruntled retail worker to exert what control she had on the life - and maybe mood? - of the person who had irritated her by - GASP - being a retail customer.
For me, it just wasn't worth it. For Ms. Tanda... well, I guess we shall see.
